The first hours after a pet goes missing are the most important and the most stressful. Try to stay calm and work through this checklist. Acting quickly and methodically gives you the best chance of a fast reunion.
Most lost dogs and cats are found near where they went missing. Search your property thoroughly (cats especially hide nearby), then walk the immediate area calling your pet's name in a calm voice. Bring treats, a favourite toy, or a squeaky. Ask neighbours and your security estate or complex to check gardens, garages and under cars.
Social media is one of the most powerful tools for finding a lost pet in SA. Post a clear, recent photo with the location, date and your contact number to:
Ask friends to share, reach matters in the first 24 hours.
If your pet is microchipped, make sure your contact details on the registry are current, and flag the pet as missing if the registry allows it. Remember a microchip only helps once the pet reaches someone with a scanner, so keep searching in parallel.
A simple, bold poster still works: a big photo, the word “LOST”, the area, and your number in large text. Put them at vet practices, pet shops, spaza shops, community boards and busy intersections near where your pet went missing.
Everything above assumes a finder has a way to reach you. That's exactly what a visible ID tag is for. With a WagglyTag QR pet tag on the collar, whoever finds your pet simply scans it with their phone, sees your contact details instantly, and can call you, and you get an alert with their location. No app, no scanner, no waiting.
The best time to prepare is before anything goes wrong. A tag on the collar today means that if your pet ever slips out, the person who finds them can bring them home in minutes, not days.
